13 year old Andrew Murray becomes the youngest driver to win a Full Focus race. At Watsonville, California, Friday night, in just his 4th Full Focus race, Andrew Murray wins the heat race by half a straight in length.
Earlier this year USAC made an unprecedented move and allowed Andrew to become emancipated at 13 years of age. In three starts he has been in the top 5 on two occasions this year, however it all came together Friday night for USAC's youngest driver.
Andrew kept his eye on the track conditions and made his decisions for shocks and stagger before heading out for the heat race. His selections proved to be good, as he took the lead by lap 2 and continued to walk away from the field.
With a lot of USAC races, if you win the heat you then start at the back, and Friday night was no exception. Always being aggressive at the start, Andrew took no prisoner's in jumping up to 3rd very quickly, and then by lap 4 was comfortably in 2nd. The track had changed considerably, and Andrew had chosen shock settings and stagger that again appeared to suit the track conditions. By lap 17 Andrew had finally worked out which line would give him the best side-bite/forward bite combination and began to close the gap to first place quite considerably, but USAC cut the race short and he finished in 2nd.

Andrew displayed that his maturity and driver skills are far beyond his age of 13 years.
