June 26th Update Bakersfield , CA .
In just his 5th race of the season, 13 year old, Andrew Murray, racing in theDirt Focus USAC series finished 2nd after taking the lead with 3 to go. Andrew is the youngest USAC driver in US history to compete in the Ford Focus series. USAC granted Andrew an excemption to the age limit this year on a probational license, which they have since lifted due his performance and top 5 finishes this year.
The crew struggled during the night to stay up with the constantly drying track, but for the main event, Andrew selected the stagger, shock settings and ride height on his PC550 Holdings Ford Focus before going to the grid. He started the main from the second last row.
Once the green flag dropped, Andrew moved up just 2 spots while he adjusted his shock settings and tried different lines through both ends of the track. The lower section had dried out considerably in turns 1 and 2 however turns 3 and 4 still had some moisture, with the exit of 4 carrying very little side bite. After the first yellow flag, Andrew had the found the shock settings he liked and pasted 3 cars in just turn 4 alone. With 5 to go the yellow flag waved for the second time, Andrew stiffened up the right rear shock one last time, and when the green flag waved Andrew moved quickly into 1st place with just 3 to go, passing Nick Carlson coming out of turn 4. Nick Carlson, a multi-national champion, fought Andrew at every corner until the last lap when Andrew's car drifted high enough out of turn 4 for Nick to slip underneath the PC550 Holdings Focus to win the race.
This was Andrew's second 2nd place finish this year, with 3 top 5 finishes. Despite missing two races due to sponsor commitments, Andrew is 5th in points for the championship in the USAC Ford Focus Dirt series this year.
Andrew now has 4 weeks off from USAC racing, however he starts his NASCAR Late Model testing at Bill McAnally's on July 16th 2010
